Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones

Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones

Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones belong to The Higher Order of angels and reverently honor the throne of the Holy Trinity. They are the head of all movements. This order is that of the "high priests", for they uphold the throne of ELOHIM. They are always attentive to their own class and those below them.

Seraphim

The Seraphim are the highest order. They are a movement of fire, warming those below them with the fire of divine love. The Bible describes the Seraphim as terrifying looking creatures.

They have eyes covering the inside and outside of their body and they have 6 wings: 2 cover the face, 2 cover the feet, and 2 for flying. The six wings that each of them is said to possess indicate the revelations they receive from the Creator and pass on to mankind.

Isaiah 6:2-3 "Above Him stood seraphim, each having six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”

Revelations 4:8 "The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

They have faces similar to a lion, a calf, an eagle and a man.

Revelations 4:7 "The first living creature was like a lion, the second like a calf, the third had a face like a man, and the fourth was like an eagle in flight."

In a divine sense:

  • The lion represents power, majesty, wisdom, dignity and leadership.

  • The calf represents strength.

  • The eagle represents stamina, and youth.

  • The man represents the image of God.

They proclaim unceasingly the holiness of ELOHIM echoing his glory in the heavenly places.

Revelations 4:8 "Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty— the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.”

Isaiah 6:3 "And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”

They minister to God. They are his agents of purification.

Isaiah 6:6-7 "Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And with it he touched my mouth and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned for.”

Cherubim

The Cherubim are an order that holds the throne of the Holy Trinity. They are the guardians of the path to the tree of life.

Genesis 3:24 "So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life."

A careful reading of the Scriptures portrays an image of the cherubim in total opposition with the traditional depiction of little baby cherubs as we know them. In the Bible, cherubim are mainly described as scary entities with human features.

Ezekiel 10:15 "Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures I had seen by the River Kebar."

Cherubim are essentially described as four-headed entities, with bodies similar to those of men and soles of feet similar to those of calves.

Ezekiel 1:5-7 "And within it was the form of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: They had a human form, but each had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the hooves of a calf, gleaming like polished bronze."

Each of their four faces represents a man, an eagle, a lion, and a calf. It is interesting to note that in Ezekiel 10:14, the face of the calf is replaced by that of a cherub. Lucifer is called a cherub, which means that his original appearance resembles that of a winged bovine standing upright, with hands and a body similar to those of a human, and soles of the feet resembling those of a bovine: a calf or an ox.

Ezekiel 1:10 "The form of their faces was that of a man, and each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and also the face of an eagle."

Ezekiel 10:13-14 "I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels. Each of the cherubim had four faces: the first face was that of a cherub, the second that of a man, the third that of a lion, and the fourth that of an eagle.

Cherubim have 4 wings with human's hands underneath each wing. Their bodies, back, hand and wings are covered with eyes.

Ezekiel 10:5-21 "The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks... The cherubim appeared to have the form of human hands under their wings... Their entire bodies, including their backs, hands, and wings, were full of eyes all around, as were their four wheels... Each of the cherubim had four faces: the first face was that of a cherub, the second that of a man, the third that of a lion, and the fourth that of an eagle..."

In Ezekiel 1:15-18, the prophet sees enormous wheels in front of each four faces of the cherubim. These wheels, called Ophanim, accompany each faces of the cherubim. The wheels have high rims and shine like Topaz, they are entirely covered with eyes. Each wheel intersects with another, moving in any direction without deviating. Symbolically the eyes indicate the vigilant nature of these entities, as well as the mystery of the revelations of the Trinity, and represent God who sees all and knows all. The upright walk without deviation represents the absolute justice and truth from which God never turns away. Their high rims emphasize their impressive power.

Ezekiel 10:16 "When the cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them, and even when they spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not veer away from their side."

Ezekiel 1:15-21 "Now as I looked at the living creatures, behold, a wheel was on the earth beside each living creature with its four faces. The appearance of the wheels and their workings was like the color of beryl, and all four had the same likeness. The appearance of their workings was, as it were, a wheel in the middle of a wheel. When they moved, they went toward any one of four directions; they did not turn aside when they went. As for their rims, they were so high they were awesome; and their rims were full of eyes, all around the four of them. When the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them; and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. Wherever the spirit wanted to go, they went, because there the spirit went; and the wheels were lifted together with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. When those went, these went; when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up together with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels."

The Bible teaches that the throne of God rests above the cherubim. They uphold the throne of ELOHIM and are the official guardians of his throne. The cherubim and their Ophanim serve as runners of the heavenly chariot.

Psalm 80:1 "For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” A Psalm of Asaph. Hear us, O Shepherd of Israel, who leads Joseph like a flock; You who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine forth"

Isaiah 37:16 "“O LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth."

2 Samuel 22:11-12 "He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds."

Psalm 18:10-11 "He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness His hiding place, and storm clouds a canopy around Him."

Trones

The Thrones belong to the higher order of angels and are positioned at the heavenly borders of the Holy of Holies. They are a fixed movement, which is not shaken by the trials that come upon them.

Colossians 1:16 "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him."
