Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones

Biblical description of the Seraphim

Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones

The Cherubim, Seraphim and Thrones belong to The Higher Order and are an intellectual movement that reverently honor the throne of the Holy Trinity. They are the head of all movements. This order is that of the "high priests", for they uphold the throne of ELOHIM. They are always attentive to their own class and those below them.

Seraphim

The Seraphim belong to the higher order of angels. They are a movement of fire, warming those below them with the fire of divine love.

The Bible describes the Seraphim as terrifying looking creatures.

1. They have 6 wings: 2 cover the face, 2 cover the feet, and 2 for flying. The six wings that each of them is said to possess indicate the revelations they receive from the Creator and pass on to mankind.

  • Isaiah 6:2-3 "Above Him stood seraphim, each having six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”

2. They have eyes covering the inside and outside of their body.

  • Revelations 4:8 "Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out."

3. They have faces similar to a lion, a calf, an eagle and a man. In a divine sense, the lion represents power, majesty, wisdom, dignity and leadership. The calf represents strength. The eagle represents stamina, and youth. The man represents the image of God, his glory.

  • Revelations 4:7 "The first living creature was like a lion, the second like a calf, the third had a face like a man, and the fourth was like an eagle in flight."

4. They proclaim unceasingly the holiness of ELOHIM echoing his glory in the heavenly places.

  • Isaiah 6:3 "And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”

  • Revelations 4:8 "Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty— the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.”

5. They minister to God. They are his agents of purification.

  • Isaiah 6:6-7 "Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And with it he touched my mouth and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned for.”

Cherubim

The Cherubim belong to The Higher Order and are an intellectual movement that holds the throne of the Holy Trinity with respect. It's the leader of all movements. This order, which also includes the Seraphim and Thrones, is the order of the "high priests" because they uphold the throne of YAHWEH. The class of Cherubim is an intellectual movement. They are always mindful of their own class and those beneath them.

A careful reading of the Scriptures portrays an image of the cherubim in total opposition with the traditional image of cute baby cherubs as we know them. In the Bible, cherubim are mainly described in the likeness of scary animals with human features.

  • Ezekiel 10:15 "Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures I had seen by the River Kebar."

1. They have 4 wings with human's hands underneath each wing and accompanying wheels (called ophanims).

  • Ezekiel 1:5-7 "And within it was the form of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: They had a human form, but each had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the hooves of a calf, gleaming like polished bronze."

2. They have four faces: that of a man, an eagle, a lion and a calf. The soles of their feet are similar to those of a calf.

  • Ezekiel 1:10 "The form of their faces was that of a man, and each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and also the face of an eagle."

3. Their body is entirely covered with eyes and they walk straight without ever turning back. Symbolically this means they possess the attributes of YAHWEH: The eyes indicate the mystery of the revelations of the Trinity and represent God who sees all and knows all. The upright walk without ever turning represents the absolute justice and truth of God from which He never turns away.

  • Ezekiel 10:16 "When the cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them, and even when they spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not veer away from their side."

  • Ezekiel 10:5-21 "The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks... The cherubim appeared to have the form of human hands under their wings... Their entire bodies, including their backs, hands, and wings, were full of eyes all around, as were their four wheels... Each of the cherubim had four faces: the first face was that of a cherub, the second that of a man, the third that of a lion, and the fourth that of an eagle..."

The Bible also teaches that the cherubim uphold the throne of YAHWEH and are the official guardians of his throne. In the visions of Ezekiel, the throne of YAHWEH rests above the cherubim. They serve as runners for the heavenly chariot and guard the path to the tree of life.

  • Psalm 80:1 "For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” A Psalm of Asaph. Hear us, O Shepherd of Israel, who leads Joseph like a flock; You who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine forth"

  • Isaiah 37:16 "“O LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth."

  • Genesis 3:24 "So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life."

  • 2 Samuel 22:11-12 "He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds."

  • Psalm 18:10-11 "He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness His hiding place, and storm clouds a canopy around Him."

As stated above the cherubim and their ophanim have four faces: calf, lion, eagle and man. But notice how in Ezekiel 10:14 the calf face of the ophanim is replaced by that of a cherub. Through that verse the Bible establishes a link between the cherub and the calf.  According to the BDB Theological Dictionary, the word cherub is derived either from the Hebrew word kerubh (winged angel) or a variant of the Assyrian adjective karubu (great or powerful). It can also come from the Assyrian word kiribu or sedu, which is the name of the famous winged bull in Assyria: It's a winged bull, calf or cow with a human face.

  • Ezekiel 10:13-14 "I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels. Each of the cherubim had four faces: the first face was that of a cherub, the second that of a man, the third that of a lion, and the fourth that of an eagle.

Trones

The Thrones belong to the higher order of angels and are positioned at the heavenly borders of the Holy of Holies. They are a fixed movement, which is not shaken by the trials that come upon them.

May the Holy Spirit guide you in the understanding of this message. 🙏
