The Bible description of Hades

As the world moves towards its end, many people have invented a psychological comfort zone in which their conscience is soothed by the image of a God who ultimately forgives all and welcomes everyone into his Heavenly Kingdom. They reject the idea that a loving God would eternally punish men for temporal sins committed on earth. In reality, as long as believers fail to understand that our existence is not about us, but rather about ELOHIM, their ability to understand His Judgment will remain limited.

If the story of your life has been one of rebellion against ELOHIM, contempt for His Word, mocking YESHUA and giving no importance to an infinitely Holy and gracious Creator then your offense is exceedingly heinous.

  • Psalms 4:2 "How long, O men, will my honor be maligned?."

In the New Testament, YESHUA mentioned hell several times and even described it. If He is the Amen of YAHWEH and His Word is Truth, then we have to take it at face value and believe exactly what He taught, we cannot simply extract or leave out the parts that make us feel uncomfortable or that we find hard to accept.

Scriptures teach that YAHWEH's grace and mercy abound on the living, and those who choose YESHUA as their only God and Savior and sincerely repent of their transgressions are shielded from divine wrath. The Bible is also clear that His grace and mercy are only extended to the living. After physical death, the image of the soul and our earthly deeds will be revealed, and the time for His grace and mercy will be over.

  • 1 Corinthians 13:12 "Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."

The rebellion of human beings does not throw ELOHIM into a state of disarray. He remains sovereign over His creation, and the immediate formulation of the curses and punishments that will ensue demonstrates His sovereignty. As a righteous, impartial and inexorable Judge, no one will be able to sway His will, nor will anyone be able to consider softening Him up, or utter vain words against Him in his presence.

  • Ezekiel 24:14 "I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming, and I will act. I will not refrain or show pity, nor will I relent. I will judge you according to your ways and deeds,’ declares the Lord GOD.”

  • Ezekiel 7:4 "I will not look on you with pity, nor will I spare you, but I will punish you for your ways and for the abominations among you. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’"

  • Ezekiel 5:11 "Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, because you have defiled My sanctuary with all your detestable idols and abominations, I Myself will withdraw My favor; I will not look upon you with pity, nor will I spare you."

  • Ezekiel 14:8 "I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and a proverb; I will cut him off from among My people. Then you will know that I am the LORD."

The Bible continually warns of a place commonly referred to as "Hell". It teaches that the abode of the dead (Sheol or the Underworld Prison) is a real place located deep beneath the earth's surface. The wicked soul enters this place after physical death.

  • Matthew 12:40 "So the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

  • Ephesians 4:9 "What does “He ascended” mean, except that He also descended to the lower parts of the earth?"

  • Isaiah 14:15 "But you will be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit."

Understand that Sheol is the abode of all those who dwell below, namely demons and angels of death. Anyone sent to Sheol will find themselves at the mercy of these entities. Demons, in particular, have a pathological hatred of humans, and they will lash out at you.

"At that time, woe unto him that shall dwell amid those pains, in company with the Devil’s own tribe! Woe unto him that is not ware of that tribe! Woe unto him over whom a vile and savage demon is set in dominion! Woe unto him that shall be hearkening unto the spirits, making moan and complaining unto the Lord, for the speedy coming of the Day of judgment, that they may know whether they shall find any remission of their doom; for they get no respite ever, save only for three hours on every Sunday. Woe unto him unto whom that land shall be for a lasting inheritance, even for ever and ever! For this is the nature of it: Mountains, caverns, and thorny brakes; plains, bare and parched, with stagnant, serpent-haunted lochs. The soil is rough and sandy, very rugged, icebound. Broad fiery flag stones bestrew the plain. Great seas are there, with horrible abysses, wherein is the Devil’s constant habitation and abiding-place. Four mighty rivers cross the middle of it: a river of fire, a river of snow, a river of poison, a river of black, murky water. In these wallow eager hosts of demons, after making their holiday and their delight in tormenting the souls." |The Vision of Adamnan, chap 30.|

Here is the biblical description of Sheol, the abode of the dead:

Prisons and Torments

You will be held captive in prisons (death chambers)

  • Proverbs 7:27 "Her house is the road to Sheol, descending to the chambers of death."

  • Isaiah 24:22 "They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. They will be confined to a dungeon and punished after many days."

  • Job 12:17-19 "He leads counselors away barefoot and makes fools of judges. He loosens the bonds placed by kings and fastens a belt around their waists. He leads priests away barefoot and overthrows the established."

  • 1 Peter 3:18-20 "He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit, in whom He also went and preached to the spirits in prison who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built."

You will be beaten and kicked. The haughty and proud will be humbled down and humiliated.

  • Isaiah 5:14-15 "Therefore Sheol enlarges its throat and opens wide its enormous jaws, and down go Zion’s nobles and masses, her revelers and carousers! So mankind will be brought low, and each man humbled; the arrogant will lower their eyes."

You will be pierced with weapons of iron and steel.

  • Job 20:24-25 "Though he flees from an iron weapon, a bronze-tipped arrow will pierce him. It is drawn out of his back, the gleaming point from his liver. Terrors come over him."

You will suffer either a fire or an intense eternal cold.

  • Jeremiah 36:30 "He will have no one to sit on David’s throne, and his body will be thrown out and exposed to heat by day and frost by night."

  • Ezekiel 38:22 "I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed. I will pour out torrents of rain, hailstones, fire, and sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him."

You will be very thirsty and exhausted but you will not be able to have any sleep or rest.

  • Luke 16:24 "So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire."

  • Zechariah 9:11 "As for you, because of the blood of My covenant, I will release your prisoners from the waterless pit."

  • Revelations 14:11 "And the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever. Day and night there is no rest for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”

Darkness and Terror

It is a place of heavy darkness and perpetual torment.

  • Luke 16:28 "for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also end up in this place of torment.’"

  • Matthew 8:12 "But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

  • Matthew 22:13 "Tie him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

It is a place of terror, desolation and devastation, where you will weep and gnash your teeth permanently.

  • Matthew 24:51 "Then he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

  • Matthew 13:50 "And throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.."

  • Matthew 25:30 "And throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Perpetual foul stench

You will have a terrible stench, and will become extremely hideous. Your flesh, eyes and mouth will rot away.

  • Isaiah 3:24 "Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame."

  • Psalms 49:14 "And their form will decay in Sheol, far from their lofty abode."

  • Zechariah 14:12 "And this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes all the peoples who have warred against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths."

Everlasting Loneliness and Shame

You will be forever alone.

  • Ezekiel 26:20 "When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit."

  • Lamentations 3:28 "Let him sit alone in silence, for God has disciplined him."

  • Psalms 88:18 "You have removed my beloved and my friend; darkness is my closest companion."

You will be covered with a perpetual shame.

  • Ezekiel 16:61 "Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed"

  • Psalms 89:45 “You have cut short the days of his youth; You have covered him with shame.”

  • Isaiah 47:3 “Your nakedness will be uncovered and your shame will be exposed.”

  • Ezekiel 5:15 “So you will be a reproach and a taunt, a warning and a horror to the nations around you, when I execute judgments against you in anger, wrath, and raging fury.

You will have nowhere to hide.

  • Hebrews 4:13 “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account..”

  • Job 34:22 “There is no darkness or deep shadow where the workers of iniquity can hide.”

  • Jeremiah 23:24 "Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?” declares the LORD. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?””

Everything you have done in secret will be exposed for all to see. All of humanity will be able to see what you have done.

  • Luke 12:3-4 "What you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the housetops. I tell you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more."

  • Job 20:27 "The heavens will expose his iniquity, and the earth will rise up against him."

  • Luke 8:17 "For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light."

  • 1 Corinthians 4:5 "He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts."

  • Job 12:22 “He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into light.”

No more hope, eternally forgotten

You will have no hope in anything knowing that your fate is eternal.

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:13 "Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope."

  • Job 8:13 "Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so the hope of the godless will perish."

  • Isaiah 38:18 "For Sheol cannot thank You; Death cannot praise You. Those who descend to the Pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness."

  • Job 11:20 "But the wicked will be blinded. They will have no escape. Their only hope is death."

Nobody will remember you or your fame, popularity or celebrity, as you will have come into existence in vain

  • Job 18:17 "His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street."

  • Job 24:20 "The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree."

  • Ecclesiastes 6:4 "For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness."

  • Ecclesiastes 9:10 "Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, for in Sheol, where you are going, there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom."

  • Psalms 88:5 "I am forsaken among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, who are cut off from Your care."

If hell does not exist then YESHUA's sacrifice is irrelevant. If hell does not exist then ELOHIM has lied to us when he warned us about this reality. But ELOHIM is truth and cannot lie.
